Independence Day traces back to July 2, 1776, when the Continental Congress voted for independence, followed by the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th. The 13 colonies broke free from British rule, and America has celebrated this birth of independence ever since.

While July 4th is not a religious holiday like Christmas or Easter, we can view it as a reflection of God's goodness to our nation. We have tremendous reasons for gratitude. The freedom and opportunities this country provides remain extraordinary gifts.

Consider this powerful parallel: just as America gained independence from Britain, we have been offered spiritual freedom through Christ. Both represent liberation from bondage, whether political or spiritual.

What does true freedom mean to you? Does it stop at political liberty, or does it extend to the deeper freedom found in forgiveness, both given and received?

As we celebrate this July 4th, let us remember that independence comes with responsibility. The freedom our founders fought for mirrors the spiritual freedom available to each of us. We can choose to live bound by resentment and past hurts, or we can embrace the liberation that comes through grace and forgiveness.

How will you celebrate both your American freedom and your spiritual freedom this Independence Day?
