Sometimes you meet a friend you have not seen in years. Suddenly, memories flood back about what happened, why you lost contact, why the silence stretched so long. Even after all this time, the slight memory brings up that old betrayal.
Forgiveness feels impossible in moments like these.
The Bible offers us profound examples of forgiveness. As I shared before, consider Joseph and his brothers. How do we understand the depth of forgiveness when we face the very person we are supposed to forget? When this happens, we need to return to Joseph's story.
When Joseph's father died and his brothers feared that Joseph would hate them and pay them back, Joseph told his brothers: "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today" (Genesis 50:20, ESV). You can read the full account in Genesis 50:15-21.
Joseph did not minimize the evil done to him. He acknowledged it fully. Yet he chose to see God's greater purpose through the pain.
When you reflect on this truth, you can move toward forgiveness again with that friend who betrayed you.
What if God has been weaving good from your deepest hurt all along?
