Recently, I found myself speaking with individuals who provide me service. You find some people are very polite, nice, and courteous, but then there are those who are short, impatient, and seem annoyed by you. This challenges you because you begin to feel irritated by their behavior.

I remember someone told me about their experience with a similar situation. As they spoke with a potential customer who seemed irritable and agitated with them during their conversation, they realized further into the discussion it was revealed that it was not personal. That person had been going through something difficult in their life.

We tend to have these experiences and later discover it was not about us, but about something they were experiencing. You just happened to be the person present in their life at that moment.

Here is the real question: Can you forgive their behavior toward you and realize it is not always about us?

The Lord's prayer reminds us of this truth: "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." (Matthew 6:14-15, ESV)

What if that difficult person is actually your opportunity to practice grace?
